Murray Claims Cincinnati Title

Andy Murray beat world number three Novak Djokovic 7-6 (4) 7-6 (5) in a dramatic Cincinnati Masters final to claim his first Masters Series title. The 21-year-old Murray crouched in exultation when he finished it off, then swatted a ball into the stands and hunched over, trying to catch his breath before accepting the crystal trophy shaped like a shield.

Murray overcame the Serb with a fluent and imaginative display of ground strokes, showing he has the ability to climb up among the world's top three, producing his second victory over Djokovic in successive weeks. Djokovic had also ended soon-to-be world number one Rafael Nadal's 32-match winning streak the evening before in their semi-final.

Safina Claims Rogers Cup
The seventh seed from Russia made short work of unseeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in a 6-2, 6-1 victory at Uniprix Stadium on yesterday to win the $1.34 million US Rogers Cup women's tennis tournament. Safina won $196,000 while Cibulkova earned $99,850.

Safina's route to the final included wins over ninth-seeded Patty Schnyder and No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova and then a three-set victory late Saturday night over 11th-seeded Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals.
