Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic won the first gold medal of the Beijing Olympic Games in the10 m air rifle shooting event. IOC President Jacques Rogge handed over the medal, with the silver being awarded to Lioubov Galkina of Russia and the bronze medal to Snjezana Pejcic of Croatia . Czech shooter Katerina Emmons overcame a splitting headache to win the first gold medal as the Beijing Olympics with a record performance while the first full day of competition also saw two wins for China.
Emmons shot a perfect 400 during the qualification round, equaling the World Record as well as setting a fresh Olympic Record. The previous Olympic Record was 399.
